Scalability describes a system's capacity to cope and perform under an increased or expanding workload. A system that scales well will be able to maintain or even increase its level of performance when tested by larger operational demands.
Scalability can be achieved either vertically (by adding more power to an existing machine) or horizontally (by adding more machines to the system), depending on the system's design and needs.
